Samsung DVD-L70 Portable DVD Player

The Samsung DVD-L70 is, for its seven-inch screen size, one of the most compact portable DVD players on the market. Thanks to a modest price it has also become one of the best-selling portable units.

PC Magazine has posted a fairly lengthy review of the Samsung DVD-L70 portable DVD player on its website, from November 2005, awarding the unit three stars (out of five). It said:

It's easy to use. Most kids should be able to figure it out. The durability of the DVD-L70 depends more on how it's treated than on the internals. If it falls from a lap to a carpeted car floor, or on top of a sleeping dog on the carpeted floor, no problem. If it falls onto asphalt at a rest stop when there's a mass exodus for the frozen yogurt stand, you may be in the market for a second DVD-L70. And that's the point of having an affordable player: the most you're out is $200, vs. up to $500 for some of the larger-screen portables.

…The DVD-L70 represents all that's good and all that's problematic going with a portable vs. a built-in device: It's cheap, it goes in multiple vehicles, there's no installation problem, but it's easily dropped or stolen and the screen isn't as big as most built-ins.

Epinions.com in early 2006 rated the Samsung DVD-L70 three-and-a-half stars (out of five), based on four consumer reviews. Amazon.com had more than 20 customer reviews early in 2006.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper in December 2005 included the Samsung DVD-L70 in a report on popular Christmas gifts. It said:

Samsung’s DVD-L70 portable DVD player is extremely light (1.5 pounds) and compact (7.9 inches wide, 1.1 inches high and 5.5 inches deep). Its 7-inch screen includes a 16:9 viewing aspect ratio, a letterbox eliminator feature and a maximum resolution of 480p. You can hook it up to your TV through a composite video connection when you aren’t traveling, and 3-D sound is pumped through two headphone jacks just in case you want to share. The battery lasts about 2½ hours and includes a car charger.
