Buyers Guide to the Best Photo PrintersThere’s a ton of information about photo printers on the internet. The problem for many will be narrowing it all down.
If you’re starting out, the Short Courses digital photography website provides a comprehensive “Choosing a Photo Printer” page. And PC Magazine offers “Photo Printers: The Essential Buying Guide.” PhotographyBLOG has an article, “Finding the Best Photo Printer.”
PC World magazine in April 2005 tested 11 photo printers for its feature “Photo Printers: The Price of Great Pictures.” It concluded:
The HP Photosmart 8450 rated best overall because, in addition to printing near-perfect photos, it's loaded with features….But high ink and paper costs kept the Photosmart 8450 from earning our Best Buy honor. Despite its problems with 4-by-6 paper, we awarded the Canon IP4000R our Best Buy. The IP4000R is inexpensive, its cost per page of 46 cents is the lowest of the full-size printers we tested, and you can achieve stellar results printing 4-by-6 photos on letter-size paper.
The Tom’s Hardware website carries a major article, from May 2005, on photo printers, based on comprehensive testing of six of them: Canon Selphy CP500, Canon Selphy DS700, Epson PictureMate MPE, HP Photosmart 375, Kodak EasyShare Printer Dock Plus and Lexmark P315. It concluded:
The HP came out ahead by a length with its Photosmart 375, which produces excellent results, is very adaptable, and has a reasonable cost of use. Kodak is simply out of the race. Epson and Canon will have to quickly find ways to offer products that are more user-friendly than the PictureMate and Selphy DS700, whose lack of a preview display is a major drawback. And the pleasant surprise comes from Lexmark, who has managed to rather quietly come out with a fine product for novice digital photographers.
In August 2005 Business Week magazine carried an article, “Snapshot Printers,” with recommendations for the HP Photosmart 475 and the Epson PictureMate Deluxe Viewer Edition.
ZDNet carries a feature, “Editors Top Printers,” updated in January 2006 and stating: “These are the elite, the printers you trust with your fondest memories.” The editors rate just six printers, with the Canon Pixma iP8500 and the Epson Stylus Photo R800 coming out on top, followed by the Epson Stylus Photo 2200, the Canon i9900, the HP Photosmart 7960 and the HP Photosmart 8750 Professional.
The About empire of websites carries an article, “Top Five Photo Printers for 2005.” They are Epson Stylus Pro 4000, Canon Pixma iP8500, Canon Selphy DS700 Photo Printer, Epson PictureMate Deluxe Viewer Edition and Sony PictureStation DPP-FP30.
Many other websites offer selections of printer reviews. Here are some of the best that I’ve found:
