HP Photosmart 8450 Photo Printer

The 8450 is one of the most popular of HP's large range of photo printers.

PC Magazine said about it:

Bottom Line: The HP Photosmart 8450 Photo Printer is faster than most ink jets for business applications and offers excellent photo quality with eight-color printing. Kiosk-style features for direct printing let you preview pictures on the 2.5-inch color LCD, crop them, remove red-eye, sharpen images, and more.

Pros: Excellent photo output. LCD for previewing photos. Kiosk-style direct-print features include cropping, sharpening, and more. Ethernet connection.

Cons: Graphics show banding in default mode. Plain-paper pages with nearly full coverage tend to curl.

The Steve's Digicams website concluded:

The Photosmart 8450's photo print quality is nothing short of excellent and rivals the output of the best photo inkjet printers that we've used. It isn't as fast as the Canon "i" and the new 2004 "iP" series printers, but it is faster than previous HP photo printer models that we reviewed last year.

If I was impressed with the HP 7960 then I am besotted with the HP 8450. This printer has produced consistently excellent results throughout my weeks test period.

I am not over struck with the physical size of the printer, you could be forgiven for thinking it was an A3 printer. Nor was I impressed with the design, it looks like something that the Cadbury Smash aliens would use. Other manufacturers like Canon have radically changed the look of the printer, shame that HP didn't look at this aspect too. Whilst I am on negative aspects, Mr. HP please rethink the naming of your inks, its too corporate for the creative minded person - save the numbers for your business laser printers.

When it comes to print quality, then this printer is in a league of its own. I have seen plenty of printers in my time, but this one produces excellent results time after time. The only losers here are going to be the Colour management vendors. HP have got it spot on with the 8450, you can safely forget about creating a custom profile. If you do want to tweak the settings then this is an easy job via the excellent controls on the print dialogue palette.

The HP Photosmart 8450 is a network photo ink-jet printer that uses up to eight dye-based inks to print photos with or without your computer.

....The quality of the prints was impressive. In fact, the 8450 had some of the cleanest text print we’ve seen from an ink-jet printer, rivaled only by another HP printer we recently reviewed, the DeskJet 6840....Photo quality was also outstanding. The colors in our standard Macworld test image were a near perfect match when judging it against our match print of the file.

....The HP Photosmart 8450 is a great choice for those looking for a photo printer to share over a network. Packed with features, the 8450 prints excellent photos and some of the best text we’ve seen from an ink-jet printer.
