Epson Stylus Photo R1800 Printer

The R1800 is one of the top-of-the-line models in Epson's range of photo printers.

PC Magazine said about it:

With good or better quality for text and graphics, along with surprisingly good speed for business applications, the Epson Stylus Photo R1800 ($550 street) isn't necessarily strictly for photos. Even so, you can easily justify using it as a dedicated photo printer, as it gives true photo-quality output at sizes up to 13 by 44 inches.

....Performance on our business applications suite...was faster than most standard ink jets, with a total of 16 minutes 13 seconds. We've clocked only five faster ink jets....The current Editors' Choice, the Canon i9900, was far slower, at 25:19. The R1800's speed for photos is good, but nowhere near as impressive, with an average 1:18 for each 4-by-6 (compared with 30 seconds for the i9900) and 2:42 for each 8-by-10 (compared with 1:05 for the i9900).

The i9900's photo speed still gives it the edge as our Editors' Choice among photo printers. But if you also want to print text and graphics on a regular basis or print on optical discs, the R1800 may be the better match for your needs.

The British photo-i site, in a massive 14-page review, concluded:

The R1800 is a robust well built and highly specified printer. The main advantage of this printer is that it uses the tried and proven UltraChrome pigment inks. For a photographer who wants to sell prints, UltraChrome pigment ink is designed for print permanence, with a estimated at 80+ years for glossy papers and 100+ years on matte media's, this long print life rivals silver halide. Longevity of prints isn’t the only factor, the R1800 produces outstanding colours due to the new colour conversion engine, PhotoEnhance 6. The inclusion of red and blue ink increases the colour gamut and colour space, essential for photographers requiring premium colour reproduction. This takes the colour gamut from a conventional 79% to 98%, which means your prints are going to have expanded colour.

....Would I buy this printer? Without hesitation, it is a printer for the advanced hobbyist or photographer who wants to sell photographs or needs to produce high quality exhibition prints.

Pros:
Superb print quality
Print life
Separate ink tanks
Gloss Optimizer
CD/DVD printing

Cons:
Ink prices
Awkward roll media handling
Yellows

The Epson Stylus Photo R1800 sets the standard for versatile, high-performance, large-format desktop photo printing. It’s speedy and it produces beautiful prints. It doesn’t get any better than this, and certainly not for this price.

The Steve's Digicams website said:

The Epson Stylus Photo R1800 is a fast and versatile wide-carriage photo printer that when used with Epson UltraChrome inks and papers, produces photo lab quality prints that last as long as conventional photo prints.

....If you need to make large, professional quality prints then this printer is sure to please. We had no problems printing very acceptable prints "right out of the box" and after a little tweaking the results were simply outstanding. Priced at around $500 USD...at the time of this review, the Epson Stylus Photo R1800 is a very good value.

CNET concluded:

The good: Excellent color photo quality; relatively speedy; CD- and DVD-label printing.

The bad: High-maintenance nozzles; Epson makes you look elsewhere for top-of-the-line black-and-white photo quality.

The bottom line: A very solid medium-format printer with a couple of quirks.
