Canon i9900 Photo Printer

The i9900 is the most expensive of Canon’s large range of home-use desktop printers.

Digital Imaging raved about it:

HP stunned us with gorgeous dye-based inkjet prints and Epson impressed us with extraordinary pigment-based prints on a variety of media. How could Canon compete, we wondered? Several ways, it turns out.

…Let's see. High resolution, microfine droplets, extended color gamut, speed, great software, affordable, even a nice looking box with high-speed port, plus support for printing directly from some cameras. We thought we were in heaven when we saw our first 13x19 zip out of this printer but we suspect heaven doesn't have gear this good.

For high-quality photos up to 13 by 19 inches without the wait, the Canon i9900 Photo Printer is our printer of choice. It can serve as an all-purpose printer, but that would be like using a Porsche 911T as your everyday car.

…We've learned to expect Canon printers with a high nozzle count to be far faster than all-purpose printers for photos, but slower for other applications, and that's exactly what we saw…. So you can get faster text and graphics for a lot less money, but if you need a printer that does it all and produces superb photos fast, the i9900's combination of speed and output quality is tough to beat at any price.

The Steve’s Digicams website concluded:

Every time I think that it just can't get any better - it does!  Canon has improved the color gamut, the output resolution and made it print even faster.  I personally own the Canon i9100 and the output from the new i9900 is noticeably more impressive, especially the reds and greens. It's not the same as using the vivid printing effect or increasing the overall saturation, these prints just have more visual "punch."  There's no doubt that the addition of the Red and Green inks have expanded the already photo-realistic output of Canon's 6-color printing system. The only downside is that you now have to buy more ink tanks, eight versus six, but thankfully they're replaced individually and only when needed.

Canon raises the bar for creating a printer with 2 picoliter, 6,144 nozzles, and an eight-color print system. With the addition of red and green ink, this allows the i9900 photo printer to create prints with an increased color gamut and more true-to-life colors. The large format output that the Canon i9900 Photo Printer creates is striking. The glossy prints that the i9900 outputs are truly indistinguishable from lab prints. Now you have the flexibility to create your masterpieces at home at a price that is hard to beat at $499.

If I had unlimited Canon Photo Paper Pro stashes, I’d be printing into the wee hours of the morning, every night. This is one impressive machine, and the only drawbacks I can think of are the near-necessity to use Canon’s expensive and proprietary paper, and the sheer amount of space this giant machine takes up in my workspace…. Another question that will need to remain unanswered, for now, is the question of durability. We'll have to see whether these fabulous prints, which are essentially ink on paper, last as long as professionally processed prints. In the meantime, I'm awestruck by the immediate quality of this machine.

If you're looking to output photos larger than 8 x 10 inches, then this is the printer to choose. Offering better quality and faster print speeds than the Epson 2200, the Canon i9900 is truly a great buy.
