Canon PIXMA MP500 Photo Printer

The Canon PIXMA MP500 – part of the large Canon printer range - has become one of the top-selling photo printers in the US.

A November 2005 review in PC Magazine said:

The Canon Pixma MP500 Photo All-In-One ($199.99 direct), built around the same engine as the Editors' Choice Canon Pixma iP4200 Photo Printer, offers both more and less than you might expect for the price. Some shortcomings, such as a lack of fax support and the absence of an automatic document feeder (ADF) could limit [its] usefulness depending on your needs. But unexpected pluses like excellent paper handling that includes duplexing compensate, so this is an excellent choice for a home or home office if faxing and high volume input aren't concerns.

...Performance is a strong point. On our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software, www.qualitylogic.com), the MP500 took 15 minutes, 17 seconds, total—the fastest for any ink jet AIO [All-In-One] we've seen. Even the much more expensive 3310, at 15:42, and the RX700, at 16:00, were a bit slower. No other AIO in the MP500's price class or below has broken the 18-minute mark. Performance for photos was a little slower relative to other printers, but still earned a score at the high end of very good, averaging 1:18 for each 4-by-6, and 3:12 for each 8-by-10.

We'd ideally like the MP500 to have one or more improvements—an ADF, a fax modem, or a touch better graphics and photo output, but even as is, it offers the strongest combination of speed, quality, and features in its price range, which makes it our new Editors' Choice for low-end personal AIOs.

According to NewsFactor Magazine Online:

The MP500 boasts excellent print quality. Color photos stand out, offering warm, vibrant hues and crisp details. Print speeds are equally impressive with times of 29 pages per minute for black-and-white documents and 19 pages per minute for color. Printing a 4 x 6-inch color photo took 51 seconds.

When it scans photos or graphics, the MP500 produces 1200 x 1200-dpi images featuring vibrant 48-bit color depth.

Consumers and entrepreneurs with home-based offices will find the Canon Pixma MP500 to be an attractive choice when it comes to purchasing a fast photo-quality printer that also integrates a scanner and copier. Budget-conscious individuals will also like the $199.99 price, which makes the MP500 considerably less expensive than other all-in-one, photo-capable products in its class, such as the Epson RX700.

Canon’s own website says of the PIXMA MP500:

With the large 2.5" color LCD viewer you can evaluate your images in beautiful color, then enhance them before printing! Just insert your compatible memory card into a built-in card slot and begin viewing. As needed, your images will automatically be enhanced for red eye, sharpness and brightness on your subjects' faces. Or, you can fine tune the images using the easy control panel.
