High-Definition DVD Player Reviews
Sony BDP-S1
High-Definition DVD Player
Sony’s
first high-definition DVD player, the BDP-S1,
was released late in 2006.
Sony’s own press release said:
Sony’s
first Blu-ray Disc home player, model BDP-S1, will be available in early
summer and features 1080p full HD video output for brilliant HD imagery and
also DVD upscaling to 1080p. This initial BD player features a sophisticated
design and exceptional build quality with rigid beam construction as well as
finely tuned audio and video parts and circuits.
The
company’s RC series VAIO desktop computer will combine Blu-ray Disc
recording technology with high-octane performance, allowing aspiring HD
movie makers and other videographers to shoot their creation with a
high-definition camcorder. Using Sony’s VEGAS software users can edit
high-definition footage then archive and share it on Sony high-capacity BD-R
and BD-RE Blu-ray Discs or on traditional DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/+RW discs,
capitalizing on flexibility in storage, playback and recording. RC series
desktops will be available with the drive in early summer.
Audio Video
Revolution concluded:
When it comes down to it, the reason the Sony BDP-S1 deserves your
attention and likely your investment is the video quality. Could the load
time be faster or the remote be better? Unquestionably yes, but at the same
time, to sit there with a 1080 HDTV and nothing to feed it the glorious
video it needs is a crying shame. Beyond the native HD video playback
abilities, this is also a fine scaling DVD player that can make your DVDs
look better than can most traditional DVD players on the market today.
The Sony BDP-S1 is markedly better than the similarly-priced Samsung in
terms of features, load time and build quality. And until the new,
higher-end Toshiba HD DVD player comes out, the Sony remains one of the few
ways for you to get native 1080p video content into your life. If you are
serious about video and want to see just how good your display device can
look, you have your answer. It is clearly the Sony BDP-S1.

While the Sony BDP-S1 takes some time to load and play discs and the
occasional soft pops are not desired, the overall outstanding picture
performance and quality of construction warrant it a ♥♥♥♥ rating , a best
value in its class, the HD Guru says “Buy It”. Check it out.
CNET.com was
not impressed with the unit’s design:
Yet, even
that machine [Panasonic DMR-E700BD] wasn't the worst-looking of them all.
That honour went to Sony's BDP-S1, its first attempt at a standalone Blu-ray
player. The machine is huge and thick and had the same kind of buttons on
its front as Sony's old Trinitron TVs. Coming from the company that's
championing Blu-ray, the BDP-S1 felt like a betrayal of the principles of
modern industrial design.
